Hand-colored lithograph of a “Yellow-billed Cuckoo, 1. Male. 2. Female. in Japan Tree,” Plate 275.  Lithography by J.T. Bowen and drawn from nature by John James Audubon for his work Birds of America, Lockwood octavo edition,  published in Philadelphia, 1856.  Excellent condition.  Plate measures 5 1/8  x 7 3/8  inches.  Audubon’s illustrations of birds have become classics of American art.  Originally published in elephant folds size, the smaller octavo editions of Birds of  America were able to reach a wider audience.
