Offered for sale is the log book of the “Queen Mab” between 1926-1930. Originally built by the Herreshoff Co. in Bristol, R. I. in 1910 for Harold Vanderbilt and named the “Vagrant”.  Built for the Bermuda Race which she won. The subsequent owner Percy Chubb, changed her name to the “Queen Mab”. She was the first American yacht to be rigged with a marconi sail on her main mast.

The log records many of this country’s premier yacht racing events—the Astor Cup Race, the King’s Cup Race, and the Vineyard Haven to Newport Race and an accounting of the 1930 America’s Cup Race won by “Enterprise”, another Herreshoff  built yacht. The log also records on June 14, 1927 the Queen passed close to a periscope of a submerged submarine off Provincetown. A later note in March 1928 states “at this same spot Submarine S4 was struck by a destroyer”.  The Coast Guard destroyer “ Paulding” on rum patrol (looking for violators of prohibition) accidentally rammed and sunk the American submarine. All crew were lost. Another entry details Hull Harbor and visiting the 5 master schooner “Nancy” wrecked on Nantasket Beach.

The log provides a glimpse into the Golden Age of yacht racing by the rich and famous.

The log book measures approx. 9” by 11” and is in excellent condition.
