Trade sign quarterboard from the shop of noted Nantucket folk artist Aletha Macy. Macy opened her shop in the 1950s on Madaket Road after apprenticing with Lincoln Ceeley, and became noted for her small whale carvings that were placed on “whaleboards” and also for decoration atop the Nantucket Lightship purses made by Jose Formosa Reyes. Macy died 1971. Sign purchased at estate sale; apparently the sign was placed on the building where it could be raised and lowered to indicate shop open/close. Hinge holes remain on back of board. Black background with carved and ivory painted letters. All original; 62” x 6.5” x 1”
