Wood engraving of “Scenes in Philadelphia” from William Cullen Bryant’s Picturesque America, published by D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1974.  Views include: “Sixth Street, Girard College, Arch Street, Philadelphia from Independence Hall, Chestnut Street from Independence Hall, Chestnut Street from Ninth Street.”  Engraving measures 9 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches.  Excellent condition.  Published between 1872 and 1874, Picturesque America exemplifies the maturity of American wood engraving and the high point of American steel engraving.
