Offered for sale is this rare original book titled “The Pacific Tourist J. R. Bowman’s illustrated Trans-Continental Guide of Travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean.  A complete Traveler’s Guide of the Union and Central Pacific Railroads”.  Published by J. R. Bowman, New York 1882-83.

Original salmon blind-embossed cloth cover with gilt-letters in front cover somewhat sunned, binding is loose, yet a fine copy. Profusely illustrated with drawings and etchings of railroad routes, towns, bridges, fishing and sporting sites, Yellowstone and Yosemite Parks. It was considered a guide to the West after the opening of the transcontinental railroad.

It is inscribed “A Present to brother Neddie, on his 14th birthday.  Bessie, Chicago March 25th 1884”. Above the inscription is a notation—“Ogden Utah March 28th 1884, On board of Central & Union Pacific Railroad. Left San Francisco March 26th for Chicago, I’ll., B. Augusta Penniman.”  Betsey Augusta Penniman was the wife of the famous whaling sea captain Edward Penniman. They lived in Eastham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts with their children Bessie and Ned. Glued into the back of the book after page 372 is a small pamphlet of the “Dedication of the Universalist Chapel at Eastham” in 1890.
