United States Lighthouse Service Table Lamp with Rotating-Burner Wick Raiser, with Chimney and Milk Glass Globe from Point Loma Ca. Light Station c.1880 – 1900. This lamp is from the family of James Milford Johnson, Keeper at Point Loma Light Station in California and includes letter of provenance with information and photos of Keeper Johnson from a recent book on Point Loma. The lamp was manufactured in the Third District Lamp Shop on Staten Island, measures 13″ high and is in good condition save electrical modification and a few light dents to the base. Lamp is marked “TABLE LAMP” on brass cartouche applied to side of tank. The font has been removed and a lamp socket has been attached, with a cord running down through the reservoir with switch added and out the base. Included is a clear glass chimney and decorated milk glass globe. These lights were modifications of the Funck lamp design. The stand and the burner are the same as in a Funck 4th order lamp, the only thing different is the oil reservoir itself in that it has a different shape and holds less fuel than a lamp used inside a lens. These would have been used from about 1870 to 1905. This table Lamp with Rotating-Burner Wick Raiser is of the early style. Later versions incorporated a pinion wick raiser similar to today’s lamps. I have rarely seen this style Lighthouse Service lamp available on the market before, and have seen only one other in a museum. They were provided for keeper’s house, and may have been used in the light tower watch room as well. Base with a few light dents. Glass chimney has one ½” chip from base but is hidden when in place. Milk glass globe is nicely decorated, with small ¼” chip to bottom rim. An extremely rare item. (29174g).
