Hand-colored engraving of an Iris, Plate 750.  Drawn by Sydenham Edwards and engraved by S. Sansom for William Curtis’ The Botanical Magazine, published in London, 1804.  Excellent condition.  Plate measures 8  x  4 5/8 inches.  Beginning in 1787, Curtis’ Botanical Magazine was the first botanical and horticultural periodical and was not only beautifully illustrated but was a practical guide for growing exotic garden plants.  Many engravings were drawn by talented botanical artist Sydenham Edwards.
