Hand-colored steel-plate etching of butterflies.  Frontispiece for William Jardine’s The Naturalist’s Library, Entomology, Vol. V, published in Edinburgh, 1837.  Etching by William Lizars from drawing by Jardine.  Excellent condition. Image measures  3 3/4  x  3 3/4 inches.   The Naturalist’s Library, a forty volume series of illustrations on natural history, was an extremely popular 19th-century work because of its small format and numerous fine etchings.
